No one can deny the health benefits of raw, unprocessed honey. It has a wide array of medicinal properties that boost your immune system and improve your health on many different levels. However, a recent Australian study found that one particular type of raw honey can destroy basically all harmful bacteria known to mankind, including the most dangerous ones.
Furthermore, honey contains extremely potent antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. On the other hand, it does not contain any cholesterol and fat. Namely, honey usually consists of 80% carbohydrates, 18% water, and 2% vitamins, minerals, and amino acids.
The Manuka Honey
We are talking about the manuka honey, also known as jelly bush honey, which is produced in New Zealand. It has become all the rage over the past few years which led to shortages and selling of fake products. Therefore, New Zealand manuka producers demanded trademark protection, similar to Scottish whiskey or French champagne. After this, the fact that the health benefits of this honey were kept as a secret doesn’t come as a surprise.
Furthermore, this honey also abounds in methylglyoxal and dihydroxyacetone, which are regarded as the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), which stands for the standard used globally for identifying the unique antibacterial properties of manuka honey and its medicinal quality.
How to Verify Genuine Manuka Honey
Manuka honey is now sold in health food stores and online, although the supply levels have fluctuated in recent years and fake honey scams have been documented. When looking for manuka honey it is best to look for one that is UMF certified.
The minimum rating of the UMF is UMF 5, however, it is not beneficial except if it is UMF 10+. A good quality manuka honey is the one that is between UMF 10 and UMF 15, and if it’s above UMF 16 it is regarded as a superior quality.
Here’s how you can verify if you are buying genuine manuka honey. Just look for the following four signs:
1. Labeled from a New Zealand UMF licensed company
2. UMF company’s name and license number stated on the label
3. UMF trademark labeled on the front of the jar/container
4. Stated UMF rating number between 5 and 16+
Also, here is how different UMF ratings are useful and which manuka honey to use for different purposes:
– 0-4 UMF – non-medical purpose;
– 5-9 UMF – promotes general health;
– 10-14 UMF – stimulates healing and controls bacteria;
– 15+ UMF – extremely therapeutic, if only 1 tablespoon is consumed daily, and nothing more than that amount.
