Some household chemicals that we use every day have untapped healing properties. One of them, has a potential that is difficult to believe. Sodium bicarbonate, the main ingredient of baking soda has been under scrutiny lately, mostly because of its ability to improve the kidney function.
A study from the Royal Hospital in London in 2009 showed that bicarbonate slows down kidney disease. The US National Health Institute also conducted research that showed that kidney dialysis using bicarbonate agents have more healing properties than the regular ones. It may be unbelievable, but baking soda can save your life.
What causes kidney damage?
In order to understand how soda bicarbonate helps with kidney diseases it is crucial to understand what causes kidney damage. The food digestion is helped by the endocrine system which produces enzymes and hormones. The pancreas secretes sodium bicarbonate in order to protect the kidneys.
Depending on your diet, kidneys can also produce it. If you consume unhealthy food it can overload the kidneys and they will have decreased sodium bicarbonate production.
If the body lacks sodium bicarbonate, it cannot neutralize the acids and they will damage the kidneys and thus the aging process will speed up.
How does bicarbonate repair kidneys?
When kidney diseases patient go on dialysis, sodium bicarbonate is usually used. The process of acid buffering is the basis of all sorts of dialysis. This agent helps in removal of excess fluids and waste from the bloodstream.
Dialysis is in that way helping the sodium bicarbonate back in your body because the endocrine system cannot produce it. When normal amounts bicarbonate are produced, it can extend the life of the kidneys, the overall endocrine system and your lifespan.

The US National Health Institute first noted the effectiveness of sodium bicarbonate over normal, acetate-free dialysis. Patients on sodium bicarbonate treatment had a higher nitrate oxide synthase, which is the process that balance the pH levels in the blood. However, when on the acetate-free dialysis treatment, they had a lower reaction than the sodium bicarbonate treatment when activating wall cells to synthesis \ release of pro inflammatory or pro-apoptopic mediators.
Other studies showed that sodium bicarbonate intake slows the progression of chronic kidney disease, as well as preventing patients from going to kidney dialysis again.
This randomized controlled trial showed that patients who were on a small daily dose of SB during a year, had only 2/3 of kidney function decline when compared to patients on standard treatment. This shows that sodium bicarbonate can prevent and even reverse the onset of chronic kidney failure and stop renal and heart diseases.
How to use baking soda for repairing kidneys naturally?
Not every person can consume baking soda every day. It is usually consumed mixed with water and sometimes people with sensitive stomach cannot drink it. But it is not toxic and if you can, consume it every day to prevent kidney disease.
You can start with a half a teaspoon of SB on the first day. Then take a half teaspoon of SB and half a teaspoon of sodium chloride (cooking salt) dissolved in 1.5 liters of water for 3-4 days. After 4 days, reduce the intake to a quarter tablespoon of soda and salt.
Some additional tests are still needed to conduct a clearer image of the effects of SB. However, those people that can tolerate the taste and want to repair kidney damage caused by unhealthy diet, household baking soda is the best choice.
