Waking up between 3-5am can be an ascension symptom but if you find yourself waking up constantly around the same time each night, it could be because your body is trying to send you a message.
According to the ancient Chinese Medicine Body Clock, energy runs through a different meridian of your body at different times of day.
These meridians are like channels which send energy to different organs in order to promote health and vitality.
When there is a blockage in these channels however, energy cannot pass through causing stagnation or a build up of energy. This can then disturb your sleep and wake you up.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine if you wake up consistently at the same time, it could indicate a sign of weakness in the corresponding meridian or organ.
Here is a list of the organs associated with different times:
9 pm To 11 pm
Between 9 and 11pm is typically bedtime for most people. Difficulty falling asleep during this time is a sign of excess stress and worries from the day. Positive mantras, meditation, or successive muscle tension and relaxation exercises are recommended to help you sleep.
11 pm To 1am
If you wake often at this time it may be due to resentments you carry. This is the time in the 24 hour cycle that yin energy is turned into yang.
Yang energy is highly active, and your body is supposed to be storing this energy for the next day. Reinforce self love and appreciation, doing your best to stay calm and conserve energy.
This is physically when the gallbladder is breaking down fats. You maybe are getting too much unhealthy fats or oils.
1am To 3am
The liver is being refreshed during this time, and we all know how important the liver is. Waking up at this time could mean that the liver has too much work to do (too many toxins to deal with). Fixing your diet and reducing alcohol consumption will help.
Anger, guilt, and rage are all associated with this time. An excess of any of these feelings could cause you to wake up. It is important to try to release that anger and try to see clarity in any troubling situation.
3am To 5am
This is when the meridian that services the lungs is strongest. Of course, we are always breathing but during these hours the lungs are given a boost of energy and are replenished for the day ahead.
In order to breathe the body has to be relaxed, so waking up during this time could indicate a blockage or inability to go with the flow and relax into the direction that life is taking you.
The lungs also symbolize where we process grief and sadness, so if you have been feeling emotional you may also wake around this time.
In order to ease any emotional feelings at this time, try to release control over events and have more faith and trust in the flow of the Universe. You may also benefit from taking deep, conscious breaths.
5am To 7am
This time is for cleansing and renewal of the large intestine. This makes perfect sense because most of us have a bowel movement at this time. To help with the process, it is important to drink plenty of water. (source)
Emotionally, this time is associated with a feeling of being stuck, defensive, or impatience about lack of movement or growth in life. This is the perfect time to chant some uplifting morning mantras.
